Purpose
Industrial Financial Structure & Statistics in Taiwan is designed to present the financial structure of every industry in Taiwan based on all the relevant statistics and financial statements. This publication, as a supplement to Industrial Key Financial Ratios, supplies valuable reference materials for financial supervisory authorities and various financial institutions.
The 2012 version
The original version named Aggregate and Comparative Financial Statements, only selected statement samples from the companies with three consecutive years of financial statements and showed the information only when there were at least 40 financial statements in every industry with at least eight financial statements in each revenue interval. This strict sampling standard, with the percentage of samples selected from the overall financial statements in a whole year at merely 50%, made the statistics of this book less than representative. As a result, this publication was renamed Industrial Financial Structure and Statistics in 2008 with some major adjustments. In addition, based upon the recommendations of member institutions, the new version has the following improvements and changes:
1. Issued in compact discs
In the interests of environmental protection and extended data retention, the Industrial Key Financial Ratios is issued in compact discs after consulting member institutions. In order to respect intellectual property rights, it is presented in PDF format, provides only browsing, printing and full-text search or indexing. It is recommended that industry codes or names be used as keywords for reading purposes.
2. Relaxing the sampling standard
The sampling standard of this book was relaxed to match that of Industrial Key Financial Ratios.
3. More transparency of industrial structure information
In order to enhance the transparency of industrial structure information, we disclosed all the information of every industry, unless the industry has only one financial statement of a non-public company.
4. Increasing the revenue intervals
To make it easier for member institutions to use the data provided by the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS), this book increased the revenue intervals to seven: “below 40 million”, “40 million to 0.1billion”, “0.1 to 0.5 billion”, “0.5 to 1 billion”, “1 to 5 billion, “5 to 10 billion” and “above 10 billion”.
Standard for selecting financial statements
The financial structure information of medical institutions and private schools has been added to this book since 2004. The financial structure information in the 2012 version was computed from the audited financial statements of 2011, but those of schools in the samples were taken from academic year 2010. The financial statements of state-operated companies and some companies with dubious statements or with unique business models were excluded from the population used to compute the information. By Sep. 28, 2012, we had collected 26,243 financial statements of companies with normal operations and selected 22,686 from those reports to compute the industrial financial structure information, which would be expected to be representative.
Notes for using this book
The pre-1997 versions presented the sum of all accounting figures of companies in the same industry to give the idea of overall income, financial structure and cash flows in each industry. To make it easier for the users, we have replaced the sum with the average since 1998. The average is equal to the sum of all accounting figures divided by the number of companies in an industry.
The replacement could erase the biased statistics caused by the different number of statement samples in different years. For example, if the condition of an industry is getting better, we cannot be sure whether it is because the number of statement samples is getting larger or because the sum of income in the current year is higher than that in the previous year.
Improvement in the future
We have published this book since 1981 and provided it freely to our member institutions and their business units for industry analysis. This book has been considered a valuable tool for credit investigation and industry analysis by our member institutions. Its content will be adjusted based on new financial reporting standards or regulations. To make the publication more useful, all suggestions are welcome.
